The Vintage People:
We are favoured with a great team.
Our winemaker, Paul Troop, is both an artist, and a scientist. Born in Victoria, passionate about wine, and passionate about preserving the uniqueness of coastal fruit, he's a joy to work and learn with.
Our food and wine pairing expert, Colleen Bowen, grew up in South Africa and moved to Jasper in an Alberta January for love. We like tell her story- when she came to Canada, she went from plus 30 degrees Celsius to minus 30 degrees Celsius in a day. Colleen makes the most marvelous meals for the crew; harvest or bottling time is hard work, but we all anticipate our meal breaks. In the winery, Colleen is constantly tasting both the wine, and the Salt Spring products we pair with the wine This is to ensure that you have a super Salt Spring culinary experience.
Sue Coates does everything, and everything she does, she does well, complete with an infectious laugh. Sue is the problem solver. Sue, and her husband Chris (who is the winery's electrical and plumbing wiz) are great cooks, and enjoy great wines.
Then there is Bill and I. Bill (Harkley) is a native Vancouverite, who is a pilot and a dedicated boater. He figures out the mechanics of the operations and creates the beauty of the property. I (Jan Harkley, a Calgarian) am the person who is responsible for making sure that the operations run effectively. I also work directly with Paul, so that I understand what each wine is doing, and where its going. Final bottling decisions are made jointly by Paul, Bill, Colleen and myself. We have a lot of fun working together, and consider ourselves fortunate to be members of the world wide wine community.
