In June, 2008, Dev and Joanne McIntyre purchased Salt Spring Vineyards. After a summer of commuting, they physically moved into the house on the winery property on October 1, 2008. After 24 years full of work and family life in the Fraser valley, they have made a career change and opted for beautiful Salt Spring Island. While owning a winery and vineyard is a new adventure for them, Dev and Jo are well familiar with grape growing and the wine world. When they moved to the Mt. Lehman area in 1984, Dev and Jo began experimenting in a small ‘backyard’ vineyard on a portion of their 5 acre property. They and others, were curious as to what varieties would ripen in the coastal climate. Along with these enthusiastic growers (including the legendary John Harper), careful notes were kept of such things as harvest date, temperatures, brix and acid levels. A lot of wine vinegar and grape jellies were made from the unsuccessful candidates! Eventually, Dev and Jo became aware of several promising grape types. Meanwhile, they followed with interest the development of the Okanagan grape industry, more than a little envious of their warmer, drier climate. Dev and Jo continued to develop their wine palate with holidays in wine countries such as Italy and France, and joining cellar clubs and wine societies. They also organized a group of friends into a food and blind wine tasting program meeting 4 times a year for 25 years! Dev and Jo bring to Salt Spring Vineyards their limited but enthusiastic viticultural and oenological background. Dev and Jo are dedicated to producing excellent coastal wines, concurrently advocating sustainability for their environment and their community.
